Part IV –  Eldrick “Tiger Woods”: The Man

Part I- Tiger Woods, born Eldrick Tont Woods on December 30, 1975, in Cypress, California, displayed an extraordinary talent for golf from a very young age. The now 49-year-old was destined for greatness from the very beginning when, at six months old, he reportedly could imitate his father Earl’s golf swing. Together, the teacher-father and studious son spent countless hours over Tiger’s formative years hitting balls on the driving range, practicing putting, and playing innumerable rounds of golf.

Earl also introduced him to various golf courses around California, allowing him to experience different playing conditions which helped Tiger develop a versatile game that laid the foundation for his future success. Tiger describes his beloved late mother, Kultida, as having been his life-long promoter and his “rock”. Unlike his dad, Kultida chose to remain mostly out of the limelight but heralded her son’s accomplishments both on and off the course. Through dedication, hard work, and unwavering parental support, Tiger Woods honed skills that set the stage for his legendary golf career.

As a child prodigy, Tiger’s amateur career was nothing short of remarkable. He won the Junior World Golf Championships six times, including four consecutive wins from 1988 to 1991. His dominance continued into his teenage years, as he became the youngest-ever U.S. Junior Amateur champion at the age of 15 in 1991. He successfully defended his title in 1992 and 1993, setting a record with three consecutive wins.

Tiger’s transition from amateur to professional golf was seamless. Attending Stanford University on a golf scholarship, Tiger won eleven collegiate titles, including the NCAA individual golf championship in 1996. Later that year, a 20-year-old Tiger turned professional and quickly made his mark on the PGA Tour. His professional career began at the 1986 Milwaukee Open, skipping the traditional tour school to join the PGA. That same year he earned his PGA Tour Card by triumphing at the Las Vegas International, where he defeated Davis Love, III. Woods’ first major victory came at the 1997 Masters Tournament, where he won by a record-breaking twelve strokes, becoming the youngest Masters champion in history at 21. This victory was just a taste of the incredible career that lay ahead.

Tiger’s early years on the PGA Tour were characterized by his unmatched work ethic, mental toughness, and a unique ability to perform under pressure. His success not only transformed the game of golf but also inspired a new generation of players, making him a global icon and a symbol of excellence in sports.
