Since the inauguration of the “wrap-a-round” season of the PGA, there have been early win opportunities for the newly carded graduates of the junior tour and veterans seeking a head start on the new season which traditionally begins in January with the tournament of champions in Hawaii. With a few exceptions, the top tier players have missed the wrap a round season of the PGA Tour after the Tour Championship following the year’s final major.

Tiger began the 2018 season with many wondering what the year would bring in the way of maybe making a few cuts to actually winning a tour event. Tiger stated at Tuesday’s press conference ahead of his first event of the 2029 season at the Farmers; “Before my last surgery there were days when I couldn’t sit, stand or walk.” “I didn’t know if I would ever be normal or even think about playing competitive golf again.” By Tiger’s own admission, the year began with each event being a work in progress with the first test coming a year ago at the Farmers. Tiger stated that it “had been years since he played out of deep rough, at least two years and didn’t know what reaction his back would have.”

As the year evolved, his confidence and performance grew to a point where he actually led the field in a major: Tiger shot a 5-under 66 on Saturday at the 147th Open Championship to get to 5 under overall for the week and in the house at 208 strokes going into Sunday. Woods co-led the event at one point during Round 3 as he touched 6 under for a few holes and shared the lead with Jordan Spieth, Tommy Fleetwood and a handful of others. It was remarkable given that he has no top 10s at majors and just three made cuts since the end of 2013.

Not to worry the comeback year of years culminated by his heroic march to victory at the season-ending Tour Championship, marking his first PGA Tour win since 2013 and one victory closer to matching Sam Snead’s historic 82 official PGA Tour wins. Tiger has 80.

Tiger Woods is making his 2019 debut at Torrey Pines this week and will be doing so with new clubs in tow.

Not every stick is new for Tiger. It appears he is using the same TaylorMade Milled Grind wedges from last season, as well as the TaylorMade M3 5-wood. Woods’ putter remained under the cover in his photo, but don’t expect a switch from his trusty Scotty Cameron Newport 2 anytime soon or the Bridgestone ball.
