Renee Powell to receive Coveted Golf Writers Association Award during 2020 Masters Week.

Through the years, Renee Powell has been no stranger to the development of golf and golf professionals.  History marks her as the second African American female to play in the LPGA, following only LPGA and professional tennis great, Althea Gibson. Also throughout the years, whether in program planning or personal play, Powell has always exemplified the highest level of leadership for the game of golf. Her work with the First Tee Program (from the early days of Joe Barrow’s guidance to the present day)—as well as her support of the National Golf Foundation and other programs and projects—is well-documented. It was at the National Minority Golf Foundation’s last two annual meetings that this writer was honored to hear of Powell’s contributions and others’ stories of her work to ensure universal participation of more minority individuals in the sport.  To that end, we are pleased that the Golf Writers Association of America will present Renee the Charlie Bartlett Award for excellence at their third annual dinner, scheduled be held on the eve of the Masters tournament in April.

“My life has been one that I never dreamed of,” Powell said in a press release. “I look back on my life when I was eight years old and discovered racism in school, from teachers and kids in my little community …  Now I have a building named after me in St. Andrews. It’s all because of golf.”

We cannot think of anyone more deserving of this prestigious award than Renee Powell.
