trophyshot.jpgThe Chevron World Challenge presented by Bank of America celebrates its 11th year by once again bringing golf’s finest stars to Southern California. This year’s tournament will be played at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, CA, on a course designed by famed architect and professional golfer Jack Nicklaus.

Tournament host Tiger Woods will host a field of 18 elite PGA TOUR players including the top 11 available from the Official World Golf Rankings, the Defending Champion, and two special exemption players selected by the Tiger Woods Foundation. The players will be competing for a $5.75 million prize purse in which the winner receives $1.35 million, and the 18th place finisher receives $150,000.

The tournament will help raise money for programs of the Tiger Woods Foundation, including the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Orange County. Programs developed and supported by the Tiger Woods Foundation all share a similar mission of empowering young people to dream big and to set specific goals to achieve their dreams.

The Chevron World Challenge is an offseason golf tournament hosted by Tiger Woods, which takes place each December at Sherwood Country Club, a course designed by Jack Nicklaus, in Thousand Oaks, California. In its first year, 1999, it was played at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The eighteen-man field is comprised of the defending champion, the top eleven available players from the Official World Golf Rankings, and two special invitees chosen by the Tiger Woods Foundation. It is not an official money tournament on any tour, but the PGA Tour recognizes it as an unofficial money event.

Tiger Woods established the tournament as a charity fundraiser, and all the charitable funds raised go to charities with which he is associated. It is nonetheless an extremely lucrative event for the professionals who take part. In 2007 the prize fund was $5.75 million. This is similar to many official PGA Tour events, but they usually have fields of around one hundred fifty, as opposed to only sixteen. The first prize is $1.35 million, and last place is $170,000. Woods donates his prize money to the Tiger Woods Foundation.

 The Field

As the first-ever limited field event to receive Official World Golf Ranking points, the Chevron World Challenge field is expanding from 16 to 18 professionals. Invitations will be extended to the defending champion, the winners of golf’s four Majors and two exemptions selected by the Tiger Woods Foundation. Rounding out the field will be the top players from the Official World Golf Rankings.

Proceeds from the Chevron World Challenge will benefit programs of the Tiger Woods Foundation, including the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Orange County and Tiger’s Action Plan, a nationwide character development program.
