Diversity and Excellence is how the 2025 APGA Golf Season is Paving the Way for the Future of the Sport

The world of professional golf has long been perceived as an exclusive domain, often lacking diversity in its ranks. However, in recent years, there has been a significant shift, with Black/African American men making remarkable strides in the sport. The 2025 golf season will stand as a testament to their growing influence and success, both on the PGA Tour and within the Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA).
The APGA, founded in 2010, has been instrumental in providing opportunities for Black
and minority golfers to compete at a high level. Its mission is to bring greater diversity to the game of golf by developing African American and other minority players for careers in golf. The 2025 season has seen the APGA continue to expand its reach and impact, with more tournaments and increased prize money, attracting a higher caliber of talent.
One of the standout players this season has been Kamaiu Johnson, a name that has become synonymous with perseverance and talent. Johnson, a prominent figure in the APGA, has made significant inroads into the PGA Tour. His journey from humble beginnings to competing on golf’s biggest stages is an inspiring story of determination and resilience. In 2025, Johnson not only participated in several PGA Tour events but also secured a top-10 finish at the John Deere Classic, showcasing his ability to compete at the highest level.
Another rising star is Willie Mack III, who has been a trailblazer in his own right. Mack, known for his powerful drives and

precise short game, has been a consistent performer on the APGA Tour. In 2025, he achieved a career milestone by earning his PGA Tour card, a testament to his hard work and dedication. His presence on the PGA Tour is a significant step forward for diversity in golf, inspiring a new generation of Black golfers to pursue their dreams.
The influence of established players like Tiger Woods, who has been a global icon for over two decades, continues to inspire young Black golfers. Although his appearances on the course have become less frequent, his impact on the sport remains profound. The Genesis Tournament, held annually in Los Angeles and hosted by Tiger Woods, continues its program of selecting a deserving young Black professional to enter this premier PGA Tour event as a Charlie Sifford exemption. The Farmers Open also provides an exemption to a deserving African American in its tournament in San Diego. Willia Mack, APGA veteran and champion, was awarded the 2025 exemption.
The 2025 season has also seen increased efforts from golf organizations to promote inclusivity. The PGA Tour has implemented initiatives aimed at increasing diversity, such as the Korn Ferry Tour’s diversity exemption, which provides opportunities for minority golfers to compete at a higher level. These efforts are crucial in creating a more inclusive environment and ensuring that talent from all backgrounds has the chance to shine.
Off the course, Black/African American golfers are making their mark as well. Many are involved in community outreach programs, using their platform to inspire and mentor young golfers. Programs like the Tiger Woods Foundation, although golf is not the primary focus, are centered on education and personal development. The First Tee and the Cameron Champ Foundation provide underprivileged youth with access to golf, helping to break down barriers and create pathways to success. Although no longer a member of the PGA Tour, Harold Varner III continues to grow his game on the LIV Tour. He also gives back to the game through his own foundation. It was this desire that gave impetus to his move to LIV.
The 2025 golf season has been a landmark year for Black/African American men in professional golf. With the continued growth of the APGA, the success of all the 2025 APGA winners, and the enduring influence of Tiger Woods, the future looks bright for diversity in the sport. As golf continues to evolve, the contributions of Black golfers will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the game’s future, inspiring future generations.
