A wise teacher of golf once told me about what to expect of my game on the first tee. “Be glad if you can get the ball to leave here and go “out there” someplace.” When you set your sights on something humble, anything above that is is a win. The expectations for Tiger Woods this week at the Farmers Insurance Open range from missing the cut, to actually contending for a win on Sunday afternoon. (ed)

Harold Varner III (born August 15, 1990) is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. Despite his smaller stature, Varner is one of the longest drivers of the golf ball on tour. Varner is one of just a handful of African-American professional golfers. He won the Australian PGA Championship in December 2016. Varner is in the field this week at the Farmers Insurance Open. I have recently learned that I have been selected along with ten other outstanding individuals to be inducted into the African American Golf Hall of Fame. The Awards Celebration and the 8th Annual African American Collegiate & Golfers Hall of Fame Celebration will take place in May 2018. Words, even from this writer, cannot describe the humility and honor I feel at this moment in my life. You don’t begin your career in any field with the goal of being chosen for an honor of your achievements or contributions.
