Vincent Johnson has the game and the opportunity

Will he be the  first African-American to seriously follow Tiger on the PGA Tour? We think so.

LOS ANGELES -On the clubhouse balcony at Riviera, high enough to see the Pacific Ocean over the tops of eucalyptus trees that frame fairways, Vincent Johnson hardly looked like a player about to make his PGA Tour debut. For one thing, he was dressed smartly in a dark suit and tie. He also stood out because of the color of his skin.

In the dozen years since Tiger Woods joined the PGA Tour, the number of players with African-American heritage at PGA events have been few. Kevin Hall, who is black and deaf, has received sponsor exemptions in New Orleans and Pebble Beach. Tim O’Neal has made it as far as the final stage of Q-school. Tony Smith qualified for the Buick Invitational in February of this year. Read more

Barbara Douglas Appointed Chairman of USGA Women’s Committee

Barbara Douglas of Scottsdale, Ariz., has been appointed to serve a one-year term in 2009 as chairman of the United States Golf Association Women Committee. Douglas takes over as chairman after serving as vice-chairman of the committee for the past two years, as she succeeds Roberta Bolduc of Longmeadow, Mass., who served two consecutive one-year terms. Martha Lang of Birmingham, Ala., has been appointed to a one-year term as vice-chairman. Read more

Pat Perez Stays Strong to Win The 50th Bob Hope Classic .
